Mill Description

This relatively small mill is located on the south-east outskirts of the village. The water channel is overgrown and not visible. The sloping lower tier of the penstock is built of irregularly coarsed basalt and lime. On top there is a sloping cylindrical drum of smooth concrete, topped with two rusted oil drums placed on top of each other to elongate the vertical shaft of the penstock downflow. The Evrykhou miller, Mr Styllis, told us that his father built this mill; the owners had run out of money, and so the penstock was finished in a cheaper way. The millhouse is a makrynari built in mudbrick and irregular courses of basalt, plastered with gypsum inside. Only the walls and the north double door remain. The lower sill of the window over the outflow is visible. Inside on the floor among broken roof tiles is the lower millstone with a circular metal brace, while the metal brace of the upper millstone leans against the south wall. The outflow has a round arch dressed in limestone. The mill was abandoned in 1970. S. Floridou TAESP Volume 1: 268
