Mill Description
This structure is probably the penstock of a water-powered mill for grinding grain, though it may have been an intermediate structure to bring water down to a lower level for entry to a penstock further down. The water flowed in a channel which falls in a steep slope through the interior of the structure; some of this chute has been exposed by collapse at the front. A section of the leat is preserved, 1.1 m wide; its floor is plastered with lime, crushed brick and soot. The penstock is 2.1 m wide, with the chute running diagonally down at a slope of 15–20°; it has a square cross section of 0.65 x 0.55 m and is plastered with pink plaster. It used to have a metal grill at the top to catch debris as water flowed in from the leat. The Rotsos (BU0064) and Koumis (BU0074) mills also have sloping chutes. Recorded by Ian Evans, 2001, and Sevina Floridou, 2002 TAESP Volume 1: 274; Volume 2: 238–239
