Mill Description
The mill is located about 700m west of the village. It is built on sloping and rocky terrain on the eastern side of the Pediaios river. Since 2002, when the Tamasos dam was built, the mill has been covered by water from the dam. The surviving buildings of the mill include the stonebuilt water channel, a water reservoir and the dilapidated building that housed the grinding mechanism. The remains of the stonebuilt aqueduct are preserved in a length of about 5m. The aqueduct consists of a low stonebuilt wall. It was extending as a cut in the earth channel for at least 350m to the south. Today, the aqueduct is in a ruinous state while its walls have collapsed. Instead of being collected within the opening of the watertower’s shaft, as it is the case for the majority of watermills, water was collected within a water reservoir (tank). The tank is trapezoidal in plan, with a maximum height of 6m. Its front (west) side projects from the tank and in this space there is a stonebuilt inclined water channel. The aqueduct’s masonry consists mainly of river stones mixed with limestone rocks. Its corner stone consists of dressed limestone. There is an extensive loss of the binding material as well as loss of stones in places. All the buildings are in a dilapidated state. At the lowest visible level there is the narrow vaulted room of the waterwheel, which is not accessible today. Only the upper part of its arched opening is still visible. The continuous covering and uncovering of the mill by the water from the dam is constantly causing erosion and destruction of the mill’s masonry.
