Mill Description

The mill is located at the southwest end of the village. It is built on a flat terrace, on the west of the river among olive groves and other crops. A rural road runs through its southern side. The surviving buildings of the mill include the stone built water channel and the watertower. The building that housed the grinding mechanism is in ruins. The stone built aqueduct is preserved in a length of more than 60m. It runs on a masonry wall made of river stones, on the top of which the water channel is formed. The aqueduct is preserved in a relatively good state. Disorganisation of the stonework and some collapses are observed at certain places. The watertower is massive and is rectangular in plan. Its two sides are vertical while the third one (the front) has a sloping and tiered form with one step only. Its masonry consists exclusively of river stones. The upper end of the watertower and its elevated walls form a rectangular water reservoir around the opening of the shaft (penstock). The shaft has the shape of an inverted truncated pyramid. There is an extensive loss of coating and grouting material as well as loss of stones in certain places. At a lower visible level and adjacent to the east site (the façade) of the watertower, the remnants of the rectangular building (makrynari) that housed the grinding mechanism are visible. At the lowest visible level is the room that housed the water wheel that is covered by a low vault made of dressed limestone. The mill belonged to the Monastery of Saint Herakleidios, which is located about 1km to the south of the mill. In the Cadastral Codes of the Archbishopric, the mill is recorded as the property of the Monastery since 1773. D. Myrianthefs
